چکیده

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an important source of food and income. However, its on-farm diversity conservation by smallholder farmers not known in the east Hararghe Zone eastern Ethiopia. Thus, field survey was conducted from November 2018 to February 2019 assess diversity, cropping system role gender production management common varieties. producing districts were selected purposively whereas sub-districts (kebeles) randomly. Three kebeles each two major agro-ecological zones, key informants twelve general kebele constitute a total 84 informants. The selection stratified based on wealth status. Structured interview guide used semi-structured Descriptive inferential statistical analyses R (version 3.5.2). Seven farmers’ varieties identified their higher tepid, moist mid highlands (M3) cropped area (ha) significantly (p < 0.05) tepid sub-humid (SH3) agro-ecology. Most activities undertaken male adults. Insect pests prominent constraints production. Farmers’ as feed, soil fertility management. Therefore, ex situ conservation, maintenance endangered varieties, shortage land due chat plantation need special concern promote cultivation.

Phenotypic Diversity among Croatian Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Landraces

Phenotypic diversity among Croatian common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) landraces was assessed by analysing 12 qualitative and six quantitative traits in 338 accessions collected from all production areas in Croatia. Out of 12 qualitative morphological traits, seed coat colour was the most polymorphic among accessions having the highest Shannon’s information index and discriminating power. Out ...

Effect of genotypes-Rhizobium-environment interaction on nodulation and productivity of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in eastern Ethiopia

Background: Effectiveness of Rhizobium inoculation is determined by common bean genotypes. Environmental factors also affect common bean genotypes-Rhizobium-symbiosis. The effect of common bean genotypes-Rhizobium strains-environment interaction on nodulation and common bean production is not well studied. Three genotypes (Dursitu, Gofta, and Kufanzik) and eight selected isolates of common bean...

On the Origin of the Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

Phylogeographic methods provide the tools to accurately access the geographic origin and diversification of crop species. In the present commentary, I urge the common bean community to face those methods and a tree-thinking mentality with regards to the long standing debate of the origin of common bean. Such efforts will ultimately bring back interest into wild bean studies and reinforce the un...

Abortive Seed Development in Common Bean (phaseolus Vulgaris L.)

INTRODUCTION Embryo defective mutants in Phaseolus vulgaris obtained by Ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) induction were studied to determine the structural and molecular basis of seed abortion in this species. In the wild-type, the classical pattern of seed development showed coordinated differentiation of the embryo proper, suspensor, endosperm tissue, and seed coat. On the contrarily, EMS mutant ...
